The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has disrupted a multinational cybercrime syndicate based in Noida that targeted unwary internet users in Australia and the United Kingdom as part of a significant crackdown on cross-border cyber fraud.
As part of its ongoing Operation Chakra-V, the CBI on July 7, 2025, executed coordinated raids at three locations in Noida, including a fully operational fraudulent call centre situated within the Noida Special Economic Zone.
The timing of the raid was strategically aligned with the time zones of the international victims, enabling authorities to intercept and detect live scam calls being made to British and Australian citizens.
Joint Operation with FBI
Acting swiftly on credible intelligence inputs, the CBI registered a fresh case (RC 07/2025) to probe the syndicate’s activities.
Investigators uncovered that the group was impersonating technical support representatives of globally renowned firms, including Microsoft.
Employing advanced voice over internet protocol (VoIP) infrastructure and social engineering tactics, the scammers contacted foreign nationals, falsely informing them that their digital devices had been compromised by malware or hackers.
Leveraging fear and urgency, the syndicate proceeded to extort significant sums from victims, promising to resolve fictitious technical issues and restore device security a classic example of a tech support scam with a transnational footprint.
To ensure a comprehensive crackdown, the CBI collaborated closely with international law enforcement and industry partners.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA), and Microsoft Corporation provided critical operational and technical support, facilitating the tracing of digital footprints and the mapping of the syndicate’s international activities.

Fraudulent Call Centre Dismantled
During the searches, investigators seized a trove of incriminating evidence. The haul included cutting-edge telecommunication equipment and call-masking technologies, malicious scripts and programs used to deceive victims, as well as detailed documentation exposing the syndicate’s modus operandi and the scale of its illicit profits.
The call centre, operating under the corporate façade of ‘FirstIdea’, was found to employ sophisticated schemes enabling the perpetrators to maintain anonymity while targeting large volumes of foreign victims simultaneously.
In a significant breakthrough, CBI officials arrested the key operative partner of FirstIdea, who is believed to be central to the syndicate’s operations.
The individual is set to be produced before the Special CBI Court on July 8, 2025, where further custodial interrogation is expected to shed light on the full spectrum of the group’s criminal activities and potential international linkages.
CBI officials emphasized their commitment to combating the escalating threat of cyber-enabled financial frauds, particularly those originating in India and targeting foreign populations.
