ChatGPT Health: A Dedicated Space for Health Queries with Strong Privacy and Security

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Health, a specialized version of its flagship AI assistant designed to handle health-related queries while maintaining robust privacy protections and security infrastructure.

The new platform combines personalized health data integration with advanced encryption, positioning itself as a supportive companion to clinical care rather than a replacement for professional medical advice.

Isolating Health Data for Enhanced Protection

ChatGPT Health operates as a compartmentalized space within the broader ChatGPT ecosystem. All health conversations, connected applications, files, and user memories are stored and processed separately from standard ChatGPT interactions.

This architectural separation ensures that health-related data does not flow into general chat histories, and that non-health conversations cannot access sensitive medical files or memories.

The platform implements multiple layers of security specifically designed for healthcare information. While all ChatGPT communications use encryption at rest and in transit, Health introduces purpose-built encryption protocols tailored to the heightened sensitivity of medical data.

Critically, conversations within Health are excluded from training datasets used to develop foundation models, protecting user privacy even after data collection.

Users maintain complete control over their health information through granular permission settings. Health memories can be viewed, edited, or deleted at any time, and connected applications can be disconnected instantly.

When third-party apps are revoked, they immediately lose access to data. Multi-factor authentication is also available to add an extra layer of security against unauthorized access.

ChatGPT Health enables secure integration with major health and wellness platforms, including Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Peloton, and U.S. medical records via partner b.well.

Users can link lab results, activity patterns, medication lists, insurance details, and nutrition data to provide context for personalized responses. The system accesses only the data it needs, with explicit user permission.

All third-party applications approved for Health integration undergo rigorous privacy and security reviews, with clear disclosure requirements, before connection.

This vetting process ensures that external services meet OpenAI’s enhanced standards for handling sensitive health information.

ChatGPT Health was developed over two years with input from more than 260 physicians across 60 countries representing diverse specialties.

This collaborative approach shaped how the system prioritizes safety, determines when urgent clinical follow-up is needed, and balances clear explanations with medical accuracy.

OpenAI created HealthBench, a clinical evaluation framework featuring physician-developed rubrics that assess safety, clarity, appropriateness of escalation, and contextual relevance.

This framework moves beyond traditional exam-style correctness to evaluate real-world performance on tasks such as interpreting lab results, summarizing care instructions, and analyzing wearable data.

The platform is explicitly designed to support informed conversations with healthcare providers. ChatGPT Health helps users understand medical information, prepare appointment questions, interpret test results, and develop wellness strategies, but it does not diagnose or prescribe treatments.

This careful positioning reinforces that AI assistance complements rather than substitutes professional clinical judgment.

ChatGPT Health is currently available to a limited number of early-access users on the Free, Plus, and Pro plans outside the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK.

Full availability across web and iOS platforms is planned as the experience is refined. Certain integrations, including U.S. medical records and Apple Health connections, initially require iOS access and U.S. residency.
