Cyberattack Hits Maryland Department of Transportation, Probe Underway

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), in coordination with the Maryland Department of Information Technology (DoIT), is investigating a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to select systems.

Upon detecting suspicious activity, cybersecurity teams immediately initiated containment measures, launched a full investigation into the nature and scope of the breach, and secured critical infrastructure.

According to the report, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) has activated the Statewide Emergency Operations Center (SEOC), mobilizing resources from MTA, DoIT, and other relevant state agencies to coordinate response efforts.

Despite the incident, core transit services—including Local Bus, Metro Subway, Light Rail, MARC Train, Mobility paratransit, Call-A-Ride, and Commuter Bus—remain operational.

However, Mobility paratransit is unable to schedule new trips or rebook existing ones until system functionality is fully restored.

Some service operations and customer information systems, such as real-time tracking tools and call centers, are experiencing intermittent disruptions.

MTA has engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement partners to assess the full impact and implement mitigation strategies.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials pledge to provide timely updates as more information becomes available.

All Mobility trips scheduled before the incident will proceed as planned this week.

The agency assures customers that no previously booked paratransit trips will be canceled.

To accommodate riders affected by scheduling delays, eligible customers are encouraged to use the Call-A-Ride program, accessible online or via phone.

Those with urgent medical needs should contact their healthcare providers or appropriate emergency services directly to ensure timely assistance.

Real-time vehicle tracking remains temporarily offline, but parents, students, and other commuters can still access schedule details and service alerts on the MTA website.

Updates on service status, detours, and projected restoration timelines will be posted.

MTA leadership emphasizes that passenger safety and security are top priorities. “Our dedicated teams are working around the clock to restore full system functionality as quickly and securely as possible,” said MTA’s Chief Information Security Officer.

“We remain committed to transparency and will share new developments with the public and media partners immediately.”
