Frances Jacobson, a resident of Mobile, Alabama, is one such victim who discovered her SNAP EBT account had been drained, leaving her with just five cents.

Daniel Sparkman from Alabama DHR explained that these tactics allow hackers to gather enough information to steal benefits effectively.
In response, DHR is implementing security upgrades, including transitioning EBT cards to chip-enabled versions for enhanced protection.
Users are also encouraged to manage their cards online by toggling them on and off as needed.

Jacobson expressed her frustration and despair over not being able to prepare a Thanksgiving meal due to the theft.

Replacement benefits may be available through federal funds authorized by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023.
This initiative allows states like Alabama to reimburse victims for stolen SNAP benefits between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 20241.
