Cybercriminals Launch Fake BTS Tour Ticket Scam Across Several Countries

Global K-pop sensation BTS has officially returned from an almost four-year hiatus. The group members recently completed their mandatory military service in South Korea, clearing the way for their highly anticipated ARIRANG world tour.

This massive comeback announcement has sparked incredible excitement among millions of dedicated fans worldwide. Unfortunately, this overwhelming enthusiasm has also attracted the immediate attention of opportunistic cybercriminals.

Threat actors are now actively exploiting the band’s return to launch widespread, highly convincing fake ticketing campaigns against eager consumers.

How The Ticketing Scam Works

Event organizers regularly implement strict security measures to prevent automated computer bots and ticket scalpers from buying up all available inventory. For this specific tour, ticketing services in Brazil recently adopted a completely new “pre-booking” system.

Under this format, fans must make their initial reservation online. However, they must physically pay for the tickets in person at a designated local box office.

While this strategy was designed to ensure fairness for local fans, the sudden change in purchasing procedure caused widespread confusion. Cybercriminals quickly weaponized this public confusion to deploy targeted online fraud.

The attackers build fraudulent websites that look virtually identical to the legitimate ticket portals. They carefully replicate the visual layout, official branding, and the entire digital purchasing journey so that the victim suspects absolutely nothing.

When a user in Brazil attempts to buy a ticket on one of these fake sites, they are actively pushed to pay using PIX. This is an instant digital payment system managed directly by the Central Bank of Brazil.

To force victims into using this instant payment method, the fake websites deliberately simulate credit card processing errors.

They display fake pop-up warnings about high server demand or payment gateway failures. This tactic artificially pressures the panicked fan to switch to PIX before their digital ticket timer expires.

Once the instant payment is initiated, the funds are immediately routed to untraceable money mule accounts. This immediate transfer makes it incredibly difficult for victims or law enforcement agencies to recover the stolen money.

How To Protect Yourself

According to Kaspersky research, securing tickets to high-profile international events requires a careful mix of speed and digital caution.

If you want to see your favorite musical group perform without falling victim to financial fraud, you must follow these fundamental cybersecurity practices:

  • Only access official event websites directly from the band’s verified tour page rather than clicking on random links sent via direct messages, emails, or social media advertisements.
  • Examine the website address closely for deceptive typosquatting tactics, such as extra dashes, strange country codes, or subtle letter swaps like using a capital “I” instead of a lowercase “l”.
