The UK’s Online Safety Act aimed to revolutionize digital child protection when it came into effect in July 2025.

However, nearly a year later, a new report from Internet Matters reveals that surprisingly low-tech methods can defeat these advanced age verification systems.

In one notable incident, a 12-year-old boy successfully bypassed a facial age-estimation tool by simply drawing a fake mustache on his face with an eyebrow pencil. This humorous but alarming anecdote highlights a significant flaw in currentdigital protection frameworks.

According to the comprehensive survey released in May 2026, much of the heavy lifting in managing online safety still falls squarely on families rather than technology providers.

While the landscape is slowly changing, implementing robust, foolproof age gates remains an uphill battle.

Roughly four in ten parents and children feel the digital environment has become somewhat safer. Yet, the fundamental challenges of securing these platforms persist.

The digital world is an inescapable part of modern childhood, and implementing secure access barriers is a highly sensitive issue.

Almost half of the children surveyed believe that current age checks are incredibly easy to circumvent, with about a third admitting to actively bypassing these systems recently.

Children are employing a variety of tactics to access restricted content, ranging from inputting fake dates of birth and borrowing adult logins to spoofing facial recognition systems and deploying Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to mask their network traffic.

Although platforms are increasingly deploying sophisticated technologies such as facial age estimation, government ID checks, and third-party age-assurance applications, tech-savvy youth are easily finding creative ways to circumvent them.

Over half of the surveyed children reported being asked to verify their age in the past 2 months across platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and Roblox.

However, these technological gains in child protection raise significant, unresolved privacy concerns. From a cybersecurity perspective, forcing users to upload government IDs to dozens of disparate platforms drastically increases the attack surface for potential data breaches.

Parents are increasingly worried about the vast amounts of personal data collected during routine age checks, fearing that this sensitive, identifiable biometric data might be monetized or repurposed by industry actors.

According to Malwarebytes research, there is a pragmatic appreciation among youth for the safety features that do function properly.

An overwhelming ninety percent of children who noticed improved blocking and reporting mechanisms viewed them as positive changes.

Young users appreciate clearer community rules, restricted contact with unknown adults, and strict limits on high-risk platform functions.

They rate these features highly as helpful in reducing their daily exposure to harmful digital content and toxic online interactions.

Around half of the children surveyed stated they now see a higher volume of age-appropriate content compared to before the legislation.
