Google has begun rolling out a highly anticipated feature that allows users to change their Gmail address without losing their account data or access to Google services.
The new capability, which is being gradually deployed to all users, enables those with @gmail.com addresses to switch to a different @gmail.com username while maintaining their entire digital identity.
How the Feature Works
The address change process is designed to ensure continuity and minimize disruption for users. When someone changes their Google Account email, the previous address automatically becomes an alternate email, allowing users to receive messages at both addresses.
All existing data, including photos, messages, and emails sent to the original address, remains intact and accessible. Users can sign into Google services like Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and Drive using either their old or new email address.
Google has implemented several safeguards to prevent confusion and potential abuse. After changing addresses, users can revert to their previous email at any time.
However, they cannot create a new Gmail account with either address for 12 months. The latest email address also cannot be deleted during this period, ensuring account stability.
Before making the switch, Google recommends users review potential compatibility issues. Those using Chromebooks, Chrome Remote Desktop, or “Sign in with Google” for third-party websites should take special precautions.
The company also advises backing up data from Android devices, Chrome sync settings, contacts, photos, and Timeline data, as some app settings may reset similar to signing into a new device.
The feature is accessible through myaccount.google.com/google-account-email, though availability varies as Google continues the gradual rollout. Users without the “Change Google Account email” option will need to wait until the feature becomes available for their account.
The update represents a significant departure from Google’s previous policy, which required users to create entirely new accounts to change their Gmail address, resulting in lost data and service disruptions.
