The standard battlefield rapidly spread into cyberspace in the immediate wake of Israel’s targeted airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear installations, which were promptly followed by Iran’s speedy counter operations.
A coordinated wave of cyberattacks has since emerged, with more than 80 hacktivist groups primarily pro-Iranian and pro-Palestinian mounting offensive cyber operations against Israeli assets and those of its allies.
The scope, scale, and sophistication of these attacks mark a significant escalation in the use of cyber means as an extension of geopolitical conflict.
Multi-Sector Assaults
Cybersecurity analysts have documented a broad spectrum of targets, spanning over 20 critical sectors.
These range from government and military infrastructure to energy, financial services, satellite operations, industrial control systems (ICS/OT), media, logistics, and water utilities.
Notably, attacks have included both symbolic disruptions such as website defacements and denial-of-service campaigns and more advanced operations involving data exfiltration, ICS sabotage, and targeted doxxing of high-profile individuals.
Key hacktivist groups such as Mysterious Team Bangladesh, Team Insane Pakistan, Z-Alliance, Server Killers, Akatsuki Cyber Team, and GhostSec have issued public statements, often via Telegram, pledging solidarity with Iran and Palestine and calling for coordinated cyber retaliation against Israel and its supporters.

According to Outpost24 Report, these declarations are frequently couched in anti-Zionist, pan-Islamic, and anti-Western rhetoric, reflecting the ideological motivations underpinning the campaigns.
Operational alliances have also been observed, with groups like Keymous+ and Inteid collaborating on targeted attacks, and others such as Anonymous Kashmir and Mr Hamza Cyber Force formalizing joint efforts.

Evidence of State-Backed ‘Faketivism’
While many of these actors present themselves as grassroots hacktivists, cybersecurity experts caution that several high-impact operations bear the hallmarks of state sponsorship a phenomenon termed ‘faketivism’.
Groups such as Cyber Av3ngers, Handala Hack Team, and Predatory Sparrow are suspected of operating with direct or indirect backing from nation-state agencies, notably the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and, on the opposing side, Israeli intelligence.
These entities leverage advanced malware, custom wipers, and sophisticated social engineering tactics, often targeting critical infrastructure with the potential for significant disruption.
The blurred lines between independent hacktivism and state-directed cyber warfare complicate attribution and increase the risk of escalation, as plausible deniability becomes a strategic asset for nation-states seeking to wage asymmetric warfare.
Recent incidents attributed to these groups include data breaches at the Weizmann Institute of Science, energy sector disruptions targeting Delek Group and Paz Oil Company, financial sector intrusions at BNP Paribas Israel and Mercantile Discount Bank, and attacks on Israeli judicial, educational, and municipal systems.
ICS/OT systems have been compromised, with GhostSec and allied actors claiming control over water management devices, Modbus PLCs, and satellite infrastructure.
Media networks, logistics firms, and even social media platforms have not been spared, with operations ranging from data leaks to psychological warfare campaigns.
The ongoing cyber conflict underscores the centrality of digital operations in modern hybrid warfare.
As the Israel–Iran confrontation evolves, analysts anticipate further intensification of DDoS attacks, ransomware deployments, and cross-border campaigns targeting both state and private sector assets.
The involvement of state-backed faketivists raises the stakes, with the potential for attacks to spill over into allied nations and critical global supply chains.
Organizations across the region and beyond are being urged to bolster their cybersecurity postures, as the prospect of a prolonged and highly disruptive cyber conflict looms large in the shadow of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
