A newly disclosed vulnerability in HPE Aruba Networking Private 5G Core On-Prem is raising serious concerns for enterprise environments, as it can be exploited to steal administrative credentials through targeted phishing-style attacks.
Tracked as CVE-2026-23818 and detailed in HPE security bulletin HPESBNW05032EN_US, the flaw affects the platform’s graphical user interface (GUI).
The issue stems from an open redirect vulnerability within the login workflow, allowing attackers to manipulate how users are redirected during authentication.
Open redirect vulnerabilities occur when a web application fails to properly validate user-controlled input that determines post-login navigation.
In this case, the Aruba Private 5G Core GUI does not adequately sanitize redirect parameters, creating an opportunity for threat actors to inject malicious redirection paths.
How the Attack Works
Exploitation of CVE-2026-23818 relies heavily on social engineering. An attacker must first trick a legitimate user, typically a network administrator or privileged operator, into clicking a specially crafted URL.
Once clicked, the link initiates a seemingly normal login process within the HPE Aruba interface. However, during authentication, the application silently redirects the user to an attacker-controlled external server.
This server hosts a fake login page designed to closely mimic the legitimate Aruba 5G Core interface. Because the page appears authentic, the victim is likely to re-enter their login credentials without suspicion.
After the credentials are entered, the malicious site captures the data and immediately redirects the user back to the real HPE login page.
This seamless redirection makes the attack difficult to detect, as users may assume their first login attempt simply failed or timed out.
Enterprise Risk and Impact
The impact of this vulnerability is significant, particularly for organizations relying on private 5G infrastructure for critical operations.
Compromised administrative credentials could allow attackers to:
- Gain unauthorized access to network configurations
- Intercept or manipulate sensitive communications
- Disrupt private 5G services
- Move laterally across enterprise environments
Because the attack does not require malware deployment and relies on legitimate user interaction, traditional endpoint security tools may not detect it.
HPE has released patches addressing the vulnerability, and organizations are strongly advised to update affected systems immediately. Reviewing the official security bulletin and verifying software versions is a critical first step.
In addition to patching, security teams should strengthen defenses against phishing and redirection-based attacks by:
- Implementing advanced email filtering to block malicious links
