Search Engines Now Indexing ChatGPT Conversations – OSINT Findings Revealed

A privacy vulnerability has been discovered affecting ChatGPT users, with search engines indexing thousands of supposedly private conversations and making them publicly accessible through simple search queries.

The issue came to light through investigative research using Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) methods, specifically Google dorking techniques.

Researchers discovered nearly 4,500 ChatGPT conversations appearing in search results by using the query “site:chatgpt.com/share” followed by specific keywords.

This simple but effective methodology exposed a vast collection of conversations that users likely believed were private.

The indexed conversations ranged from mundane topics like home renovations to highly sensitive discussions involving mental health struggles, addiction recovery, and traumatic personal experiences.

What makes this discovery particularly concerning is that users who utilized ChatGPT’s “Share” button presumably expected their conversations to remain within a limited circle of contacts, not become globally searchable content.

The Mechanism Behind the Breach

ChatGPT’s sharing feature, introduced in May 2023, allowed users to generate unique URLs for their conversations.

When users clicked the “Share” button, they could create public links and had the option to enable a feature labeled “Make this chat discoverable,” which permitted search engine indexing.

While this required deliberate user action, many users appeared unaware of the broader implications of enabling this functionality.

The shared links followed a predictable URL structure (chatgpt.com/share/[unique-identifier]), making them easily discoverable through targeted search queries.

Once marked as discoverable, search engine crawlers indexed the content like any other publicly accessible webpage.

Search Engine Response Variations

Research conducted by cybersecurity investigators revealed interesting differences in how major search engines handled ChatGPT content indexing.

By August 2025, Google had largely stopped returning results for ChatGPT shared conversations, typically displaying “Your search did not match any documents.”

Microsoft’s Bing showed minimal results with only limited indexed conversations appearing.

Surprisingly, DuckDuckGo, despite its privacy-focused reputation, continued surfacing comprehensive results from ChatGPT conversations, effectively becoming the primary gateway for accessing this content.

This ironic situation made the privacy-oriented search engine the most effective tool for discovering supposedly private AI conversations.

Security Implications and Response

For OSINT researchers and potential bad actors, these indexed conversations represented an unprecedented intelligence source.

The exposed content included source code, proprietary business information, personally identifiable information, and passwords embedded in code snippets.

Research indicates that 5.6% of knowledge workers have used ChatGPT for work purposes, with 4.9% providing company data to the platform.

Recognizing the severity of these privacy implications, OpenAI acted swiftly.

On August 1, 2025, the company’s Chief Information Security Officer announced the removal of the discoverable feature, characterizing it as “a short-lived experiment” that “introduced too many opportunities for folks to accidentally share things they didn’t intend to”.
