Linux 6.15 Released with Exciting New Features and Enhancements

Linux creator Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux kernel version 6.15 on Sunday, marking another significant milestone in the operating system’s development cycle.

The release experienced a brief delay due to a last-minute bug report that required disabling one new feature, but otherwise proceeded smoothly with various fixes and improvements across multiple subsystems.

The Linux 6.15 kernel was officially released on May 25, 2025, after what Torvalds described as a “pretty normal” final week of development.

Despite the slight delay caused by an eleventh-hour bug discovery, the release maintained its expected timeline.

The release coincided with Memorial Day in the United States, but Torvalds humorously referenced the postal service motto, stating that “neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night” – nor Memorial Day – stops the merge window from opening on schedule.

He did acknowledge that winter ice storms have occasionally caused temporary delays in the past.

Key Bug Fixes and Hardware Support

Linux 6.15 addresses numerous critical issues across various subsystems.

Notable fixes include Alexander Gordeev’s patch to avoid sleepable page allocation from atomic context in KASAN, and several important networking improvements by Eric Dumazet for the idpf driver.

The release also includes significant memory management fixes, with contributions from Ge Yang addressing kernel NULL pointer dereference issues when replacing free hugetlb folios.

Hardware support has been expanded significantly, particularly for audio devices. The kernel now includes support for HP ZBook laptops with micmute LED functionality and Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 systems.

Graphics support has been enhanced with updates to AMD display drivers and Intel Xe graphics improvements, including fixes for PTL PCI ID tables.

Additionally, several ARM64 improvements have been implemented, including defconfig updates to ensure proper cryptographic support.

Driver Updates and System Improvements

Torvalds noted that the merge window for the next version opens immediately, with developers already being proactive in submitting their pull requests.

The driver subsystem received substantial attention in this release, with numerous CAN (Controller Area Network) driver improvements from multiple contributors including Axel Forsman’s fixes for kvaser_pciefd and Carlos Sanchez’s enhancements to the slcan driver.

Network drivers also saw significant updates, with fixes for hibmcge statistics handling and improvements to the airoha QDMA receive processing.

Storage and filesystem improvements include important bcachefs fixes from Kent Overstreet, addressing path traversal and casefold functionality issues.

The io_uring subsystem received updates to prevent command import conflicts and improve network operation handling.

Platform-specific improvements span multiple architectures, with particular attention to Samsung SoC support, Rockchip clock definitions, and Allwinner device tree corrections.

Security enhancements include XFRM sanitization improvements and L2CAP security level checking fixes in Bluetooth subsystems.

The release maintains Torvalds’ emphasis on thorough testing, encouraging users to continue providing feedback as the development cycle progresses toward the next version.
