In a series of cyberattacks that have sent shockwaves through Italy’s government and security infrastructure, the pro-Russian hacking collective NoName has claimed responsibility for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on multiple critical Italian government websites.
The attacks, allegedly politically motivated, targeted institutions of national importance, causing significant disruption to online services.
Targets Include Defense, Law Enforcement, and Infrastructure
According to the post from FalconFeeds.io, NoName claims to have successfully targeted several high-profile websites, including the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Economic Development, and the Financial Police.
Italy’s Ministry of Defense, Carabinieri Corps, Italian Navy, and Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force) were also reportedly victimized.
The DDoS attacks overwhelmed these websites with immense volumes of traffic, rendering them temporarily inaccessible to the public.
This tactic is commonly used by cybercriminals and hacktivist groups to disrupt government operations or send a political message.
At the time of this report, authorities in Italy have not officially confirmed the extent of the damage or disclosed any restoration timelines.
NoName’s Pro-Russian Cyber Offensive
The NoName hacking group has gained notoriety in recent months for its cyberattacks on European countries supportive of Ukraine amidst the ongoing war.
Italy, a vocal supporter of Ukraine, is one of the latest nations to face cyber retaliation from groups aligned with Russia.
Italian cybersecurity experts suspect that NoName’s attacks are a direct response to recent Italian policies and aid packages supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
The group previously hinted at retaliatory measures against countries it perceives as adversarial to Russian interests.
Italian Authorities Respond to Escalating Threat
In response to the attacks, Italian cybersecurity agencies have reportedly heightened their surveillance and defense mechanisms to mitigate further disruptions.
The affected websites are undergoing recovery procedures, with cyber experts working around the clock to restore access and safeguard sensitive data.
Although the attacks caused temporary inaccessibility, there is no immediate evidence of deeper penetration or the theft of sensitive information.
Italian officials have emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of increasing cyber threats, having recently invested in bolstering national cybersecurity infrastructure.
