The ransomware landscape is shifting from a chaotic swarm of minor players into a highly organized, heavily armed oligopoly.
During the first quarter of 2026, cyber extortionists published 2,122 compromised organizations on dark web leak sites.
According to Check Point Research, this staggering figure represents the second-highest first quarter on record.
While the sheer volume of attacks remains near historic highs, the true danger lies in the ecosystem’s dramatic consolidation. The top 10 ransomware syndicates now account for 71% of all global victims.
Law enforcement operations and infrastructure takedowns throughout 2025 scattered smaller groups, allowing dominant cartels to absorb displaced affiliates and grow stronger.
This concentration of operational power means businesses face fewer, but vastly more capable, adversaries.
Ransomware Hits Organizations
Several distinct threat groups drove the aggressive extortion numbers in early 2026. Qilin dominated the landscape for the third consecutive quarter, publicly claiming 338 victims.
Meanwhile, notorious ransomware gang LockBit officially confirmed its operational comeback.
Following significant law enforcement disruption in 2024, LockBit resurfaced, posting 163 victims and strategically shifting its focus away from the United States to target organizations across Europe and Latin America.

A rapidly emerging group known as The Gentlemen also broke into the global top tier within months of its initial activity.
Unlike traditional groups that rely on slow, opportunistic exploitation, The Gentlemen leveraged pre-positioned access at a massive scale.

By utilizing a large inventory of compromised networks, they launched high-volume attacks immediately. Interestingly, this group clustered its activity in the APAC and Latin American regions, pushing Thailand into the top-targeted countries for the first time.

Key threat actor movements in Q1 2026 include:
- Qilin maintained the top position for the third quarter with 338 published victims.
- LockBit returned to the global top tier with 163 victims while avoiding aggressive enforcement jurisdictions.
- The Gentlemen reached third place globally by exploiting large-scale, pre-positioned access points.
- Play concentrated 85.1% of its extortion activity strictly on US-based organizations.
Modern ransomware targeting is no longer defined strictly by geography or industry prestige. Instead, threat actors are heavily access-driven, striking wherever they already possess compromised entry points.
The United States still suffered nearly half of all attacks (49.6%) due to its massive enterprise footprint. However, the data reveals that cybercriminals are exploiting underlying exposures created by complex technology and vulnerable connectivity.
Highly sensitive sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, and business services, suffered frequent operational disruptions, checkpoint said.
Surviving this consolidated threat landscape requires organizations to shift from reactive containment to proactive exposure management.
Defending modern networks means stopping ransomware at the cloud and network access layers before it can exploit. Security teams must correlate live threat intelligence with their internal environments to close vulnerable access paths early.
