Thousands of D-Link Routers Exposed to Easy Password Hacks

The D-Link DSL-6740C, a non-US model, officially reached its end-of-life (EOL) on January 15, 2024, which signifies the discontinuation of all support and development activities for this device by D-Link.

Consequently, the DSL-6740C is susceptible to security vulnerabilities, including a critical vulnerability (CVE-2024-11068) that could potentially enable unauthorized access and compromise the device.

D-Link strongly advises users to retire the DSL-6740C and opt for a newer, supported model to mitigate these risks. While it’s technically possible to continue using the device, it’s strongly discouraged due to the absence of security updates and support.

Users have the option of carefully considering the precautionary measures in order to reduce the potential risks that are associated with continued use.

Perform a firmware update to ensure that the device is operating with the most recent version of the firmware that is available, even though this may not address the critical vulnerability.

To ensure the security of the device’s administrative interface as well as the Wi-Fi network, it is important to implement strong and unique passwords. When it comes to protecting wireless communication, enabling Wi-Fi encryption with a strong password is essential.

According to D-Link, it is recommended that users refrain from accessing the web interface of the device or any other services from networks that are not believed to be reliable.

The device should be isolated from other critical network segments if it is possible to do so, which will limit the potential damage that could occur in the event that the device is compromised.

It’s crucial to recognize that these measures are not a comprehensive solution and the device remains vulnerable due to its EOL status. Therefore, replacing the device with a supported model is the most prudent course of action to ensure security and functionality.
