VirtualBox 7.2 Adds Windows 11/Arm VM Support and Bug Fixes

Oracle has officially released VirtualBox 7.2.0, marking a significant milestone for the popular virtualization platform with enhanced support for the Arm architecture and substantial user interface improvements.

Released on August 14, 2025, this major update introduces groundbreaking features that extend VirtualBox’s capabilities across multiple platforms while addressing numerous stability and performance issues.

Revolutionary Arm Architecture Support

The most notable addition in VirtualBox 7.2 is comprehensive support for Windows 11/Arm virtual machines on Arm host systems.

This development represents a crucial step forward in virtualization technology, allowing users to run Windows 11/Arm VMs natively on Arm-based hardware.

The update includes dedicated Windows/Arm guest additions, providing seamless integration with features like shared folders and enhanced graphics support through a new WDDM graphics driver supporting both 2D and 3D modes.

Windows/Arm host users will particularly benefit from the unified installer package that now includes Arm virtualization capabilities, making deployment significantly more straightforward.

This expansion addresses the growing demand for virtualization solutions compatible with the increasing adoption of Arm-based computing devices.

Enhanced User Interface and Performance

VirtualBox 7.2 introduces a redesigned graphical user interface that moves global and VM tools from traditional hamburger menus to more accessible locations.

Global tools now appear in a vertical taskbar on the left side, while VM tools are organized in horizontal tabs above the right-hand panel, significantly improving user workflow and tool accessibility.

Performance enhancements include video decoding acceleration for Linux hosts when 3D acceleration is enabled, providing smoother multimedia experiences within virtual machines.

macOS Arm host users gain experimental 3D acceleration support through DXMT technology, replacing the previous non-functional DXVK solution, though this removes 3D acceleration support for Intel-based Mac systems.

Technical Improvements and Bug Fixes

The NVMe storage controller emulation is now included in the open-source base package, expanding advanced storage capabilities for all users.

Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) improvements include better CPU feature reporting when using Windows Hyper-V as the virtualization engine, with added support for x86_64-v3 instruction set extensions, including AVX and AVX2 on compatible hardware.

Critical bug fixes address VM cloning issues, storage corruption problems with VMDK images, and various stability improvements across NAT networking, audio systems, and video recording functionality.

The update also resolves nested virtualization features on Intel CPUs and improves UEFI compatibility.

Users should note that Arm VM saved states from VirtualBox 7.1 are incompatible with version 7.2, requiring proper shutdown of existing saved state VMs before upgrading.

The release includes initial support for Linux kernel versions 6.16 and 6.17, ensuring compatibility with cutting-edge Linux distributions.

VirtualBox 7.2 represents Oracle’s commitment to advancing virtualization technology, particularly in supporting emerging Arm architecture while maintaining robust x86 compatibility and introducing user-centric interface improvements.
