Microsoft has officially confirmed a confusing new bug affecting users of Windows 11 version 24H2.
Following the installation of recent system updates, many users are reporting that the password icon has completely vanished from the sign-in options on the lock screen.
This visual glitch creates a moment of panic for those who rely on traditional passwords to access their computers. While the icon itself is gone, the ability to log in remains intact if you know where to look.
The Invisible Button Glitch
The issue specifically impacts users who installed the August 2025 non-security preview update (KB5064081) or any updates released afterward.
When affected users arrive at their lock screen, they are greeted by a blank space where the password key icon usually sits.
For many, this leads to the assumption that password authentication has been disabled or broken.
While other sign-in methods like Windows Hello (face or fingerprint) or PIN codes remain visible, the standard password option appears to be missing entirely.
Microsoft has clarified that this is purely a display error. The functionality for password sign-in is still active, but the button has been rendered invisible.
If you encounter this blank space, you can still sign in by following these simple steps:
- Locate the Blank Space: Move your mouse cursor to the area in the sign-in options row where the password icon typically appears.
- Find the Invisible Button: As you hover over the empty spot, the button is still interactable.
- Click and Type: Click on the invisible placeholder. This will trigger the standard password text box to open.
- Login: Enter your password as usual to access your desktop.
Once you click the hidden area, the authentication process works exactly as intended.
This problem was first introduced with a specific preview update in late August. Since then, it has persisted in subsequent releases for the 24H2 version.
Microsoft has added this bug to its official list of known issues for Windows 11. The company stated that they are actively working on a resolution to restore the missing icon.
Currently, there is no specific timeline for when the fix will be released. It is expected to arrive in an upcoming cumulative update, likely in a future “Patch Tuesday” release.
Until then, users are advised to use the invisible button workaround or switch to alternative sign-in methods like a PIN or facial recognition via the Settings menu.
