X Launches MCP Servers: Connect Cursor, Claude, and Grok to X API Instantly

X has officially launched hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, enabling AI agents to connect directly to the platform’s API with zero configuration overhead.

The announcement marks a significant infrastructure shift for developers building AI-powered applications that rely on real-time social data.

Model Context Protocol is an open standard that allows AI tools to interface with external data sources and services through a unified connection layer.

X Launches MCP Servers

X’s hosted MCP implementation removes the need for developers to stand up and maintain their own bridge between AI clients and the X API.

The platform is rolling out two dedicated MCP servers. The first provides AI agents with direct access to core X API capabilities, including searching posts, fetching user timelines, and managing bookmarks.

The second server provides instant access to X’s developer documentation, enabling AI tools to reference API specs and integration guides programmatically during development workflows.

Onboarding requires three components:

  • An X developer app registered through the developer portal
  • OAuth authentication setup to authorize API access securely
  • The open-source xurl CLI tool, which handles the protocol-level communication between AI clients and the hosted servers

One of the most developer-friendly aspects of the launch is its pricing model. X is offering pure pay-per-use billing with no monthly subscription fees, lowering the barrier for individual developers and smaller teams experimenting with AI agent pipelines.

The hosted MCP servers are designed to work with any MCP-compatible AI client. This includes Grok, Cursor, Claude, and a growing ecosystem of agent frameworks.

Developers can connect these tools to live X data streams without writing custom API integration code, dramatically reducing time-to-deployment for real-time data workflows.

The developer community has responded with considerable enthusiasm, framing the release as a meaningful acceleration for AI application development.

By abstracting the complexity of API authentication and data formatting, X effectively positions itself as a primary real-time data backbone for AI agents that need up-to-the-minute information.

Engineers noted that the biggest productivity gain lies in simplified data pipelines. Previously, connecting an AI tool to live social data required custom middleware, token management, and rate-limit handling. With hosted MCP, that entire layer is managed by X’s infrastructure.

For security-conscious developers, the OAuth-first architecture ensures that all agent-to-API communication is authenticated and scoped, reducing the risk of credential exposure in automated pipelines.

The move aligns X’s developer platform with the broader industry push toward agentic AI workflows, where autonomous tools require reliable, low-latency access to live external data sources.

The documentation hub is live at docs.x.com/tools/mcp, where developers can find setup guides, authentication walkthroughs, and endpoint references.
