Beware of Fake Facebook Account Deletion Message that Steals Login

A new phishing scam is making rounds on Facebook, targeting users with alarming messages about account deletion due to supposed “inappropriate content.”

This scam, recently flagged by GenThreatLabs, involves attackers contacting victims through Facebook Messenger, warning them that their account will be deleted unless they take immediate action.

The message urges users to click on a link to prevent the deletion. However, this link leads to a fake login page designed to steal the user’s credentials

How the Scam Works

According to reports from HackManac, the phishing message typically comes from a compromised or fake account posing as Facebook Support.

It claims that the user’s account has violated community standards and is scheduled for deletion.

When users click on the provided link, they are directed to a page that mimics Facebook’s official login page.

Once they enter their credentials, the attackers gain full access to their account

In some cases, the phishing page also requests a One-Time Password (OTP) for added legitimacy.

However, any code entered will result in an error message while still sending the information to the attackers.

How to Protect Yourself

To avoid falling victim to this scam, users should follow these safety tips:

  1. Check URLs carefully: Always ensure that the URL starts with “facebook.com” before entering any credentials.
  2. Avoid clicking on suspicious links: If you receive a message about account deletion or other urgent actions, visit Facebook directly instead of following links in messages.
  3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding an extra layer of security can help protect your account even if your credentials are compromised.
  4. Report suspicious messages: If you receive such a message, report it to Facebook immediately and warn others in your network.

Phishing scams like these exploit users’ fear of losing access to their accounts.

By staying vigilant and following best security practices, you can protect yourself from falling prey to these attacks.
