Google Chrome Safe Browsing Protection Reaches 1 Billion Users Worldwide

0

In a major milestone for online security, Google announced that its Enhanced Protection mode in Chrome now protects more than 1 billion users worldwide.

This achievement coincides with Safer Internet Day 2025, highlighting the importance of proactive measures against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

Advanced AI for Real-Time Threat Detection

Launched in 2020, Enhanced Protection mode leverages advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to detect and block online threats in real-time.

Unlike Chrome’s Standard Protection, which relies on a database of known malicious sites updated periodically, Enhanced Protection proactively analyzes URLs and identifies phishing attempts and social engineering tactics.

This approach makes users twice as safe from phishing and scams compared to Standard Protection.

Key features of Enhanced Protection include:

  • Detection of scam URLs: AI models identify malicious websites by comparing them to trusted domains.
  • Real-time updates: Threat intelligence is shared across the ecosystem to protect other users.
  • File scanning: More than 300,000 deep scans are conducted monthly to detect malware, including threats hidden in encrypted archives.

Privacy-Centric Design

Google emphasizes user privacy in Enhanced Protection. Data such as URLs and page contents are anonymized and retained only as long as necessary for security purposes.

This ensures that while users benefit from robust protection, their personal information remains secure.

The feature also contributes to collective safety by updating Chrome’s security infrastructure in real time whenever new threats are detected.

This proactive sharing of threat intelligence helps create a safer internet for everyone.

Looking Ahead

Google attributes the growing adoption of Enhanced Protection to rising awareness of online threats and user demand for stronger security tools.

As the company celebrates this milestone, it plans to integrate additional layers of security and privacy-preserving technologies to further enhance user safety.

To enable Enhanced Protection, users can navigate to Chrome Settings > Privacy and Security > Safe Browsing > Enhanced Protection.

With over 1 billion users already benefiting from this feature, Google continues its mission to make the internet a safer place for all.
