Microsoft has quietly begun piloting a new Copilot capability called “PC Insights,” designed to let the AI assistant scan a Windows 11 device’s hardware and identify the exact source of performance lag.
The rollout remains limited to select users in the United States, with no confirmed timeline for broader availability.
Unlike Copilot’s usual generic troubleshooting suggestions, PC Insights functions as an opt-in module that responds to live questions about a machine’s present hardware condition.
Windows 11 Copilot Reads Live System Data
Once activated, it pulls data directly from Windows APIs to monitor CPU, RAM, and GPU load, as well as total and remaining storage space.
The tool can determine whether sufficient disk space is available before installing a new application or title, and it can itemize how much space folders like Downloads or Documents consume, without peeking into individual files unless a user explicitly authorizes that access.
According to CSN, which first spotted the feature, PC Insights also extends to peripheral monitoring. It tracks attached USB devices, external drives, printers, and webcams and reports their operational status.
On the networking front, it surfaces Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection states and checks battery condition, antivirus status, system specs, and BIOS details.
The real appeal is turning performance diagnostics into a conversation. Rather than manually opening Task Manager or Resource Monitor, someone could simply ask Copilot why their laptop feels sluggish and receive an answer grounded in real-time system data.
If Copilot reports 87GB of free storage, for instance, a natural follow-up question, like whether that’s enough room for a particular game, becomes just as easy to ask.
This effort ties into Microsoft’s larger push toward a snappier Windows 11 experience. Windows chief Pavan Davuluri recently detailed plans to shrink the OS’s baseline memory usage and smooth out performance under heavy workloads.
Yet there’s friction in this strategy. Microsoft has simultaneously worked to strip Copilot entry points from Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad following user backlash over unwanted bloat.
Adding to that tension, Copilot on Windows runs its own embedded, private build of Microsoft Edge, operating essentially as a full web application, and can consume close to 1GB of RAM even while idle.
Independent benchmarks have repeatedly flagged Copilot as one of the heavier memory consumers on a system, ranking near apps like Excel, which raises the odd possibility that the tool built to solve slowdown issues might itself contribute to them.
